Navigating Change: The Leadership Lessons Hidden in Life’s Transitions
As my youngest daughter wraps up Grade 8, I find myself at the edge of an emotional threshold — the same kind we often encounter in leadership: when change calls us to pause, realign, and lead with heart.
This month marks the end of an era in our family: the final elementary school sports tournament, the last-minute grad dress fittings, the bittersweet moments of watching my daughter grow into the young woman I’ve been raising her to be — strong, independent, kind, and resilient.
It’s a deeply personal transition, but one that mirrors the very journey I often coach leaders through. Whether in parenting or leadership, growth is not just about milestones — it’s about letting go of one chapter to step into the unknown of the next.
And that next chapter? It often begins with grief.
Yes — grief. Even in leadership. Even in progress. We grieve the comfort of what we knew, the roles we were used to, the teams that changed, or the businesses that shifted. And yet, grief isn’t the enemy. It’s the passageway. When we allow ourselves to feel it — instead of resisting it — we make space for the clarity, creativity, and calling that lie ahead.
Just like my daughter stepping out of childhood and into adolescence, we as leaders must also evolve.
We need to remind ourselves that every ending invites us into a redefinition. A reinvention. A renewal.
Here’s what I’m learning in real-time — and perhaps it resonates with you, too:
· Transitions aren’t meant to be tidy. They’re meant to be transformative.
· Mixed emotions don’t mean you’re doing it wrong. They mean you’re fully human.
· The best leaders don’t rush endings. They honour them — and then step forward with intention.
So if you’re in a season of change — professionally or personally — don’t rush the goodbye. Let yourself feel it. Mourn it. And when you’re ready, ask:
What is this ending making space for in me?
Because trust me, something is being made — even if it hasn’t revealed itself yet.
