Before I stepped onto the stage to speak to hundreds of leaders recently, I found a quiet space, and I paused. Not because I was nervous. After years of keynote speaking, facilitating, coaching, and presenting to leaders, it’s no longer about fear of public speaking for me. But it is about energy management.

Before every Keynote, Workshop, or Executive Coaching session, I intentionally take a moment to ground myself. To breathe. To quiet the noise. To settle my nervous system. To become fully present.

Lately, my youngest daughter and I have been watching a lot of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, and I know how intentional elite athletes are before they perform. The rituals. The warmups. The focus. The mental preparation. Athletes understand that performance isn’t only physical. It’s emotional. Mental. Energetic.

And yet as leaders, many of us move from meeting to meeting, presentation to presentation, decision to decision, carrying stress, pressure, distraction, and overwhelm… without ever pausing long enough to recalibrate ourselves.

We often prepare the slides. Prepare the talking points. The strategy. But we don’t prepare ourselves. And I think that matters more than ever right now.

Because leadership today requires an enormous amount of emotional energy. Many leaders are navigating relentless change, uncertainty, competing priorities, burnout, heavy workloads, and pressure to continue performing at a high level through it all.

The most powerful thing we can bring into a room isn’t perfection. It’s presence.

When we ground ourselves before stepping into important moments, we show up differently. We listen differently. We connect differently. We lead differently. And perhaps most importantly, we stop making it all about us.

Because if we’re not careful, ego quietly takes over:

  • I need this presentation to go perfectly.

  • I need to impress them.

  • I need to hit it out of the park.

But the most impactful leaders I’ve worked with understand something important:

Leadership communication is not a performance. It’s a connection.

Not everything we say will resonate with every person in the room. That’s reality. Everyone arrives carrying different pressures, perspectives, emotions, and needs. But what we can do is prepare ourselves in a way that creates the best conditions for clarity, presence, trust, and impact. Sometimes that preparation looks less like “doing more”… and more like pausing long enough to breathe. To protect your energy. To calm your nervous system. To reconnect to your purpose. To enter the room fully present.

In a world that constantly pulls leaders outward, learning how to come back to yourself may be one of the most important leadership skills of all.
