50 Things I’ve Learned from My 50 Years of Life
Today, I turn 50. And like many milestones, it has me reflecting—not just on where I’ve been, but on what it’s all meant. And then, where do I want to go from here?
The truth is, life hasn’t unfolded in a straight line. There have been moments of deep joy. And moments, I didn’t see coming - a life-changing brain injury that occurred back in 2012. And, the death of my amazing husband Jeff to esophageal cancer when I was 43 years old.
One thing is for sure: I don’t have everything figured out. But I do have perspective.
Today, as I celebrate the life I am blessed to have. I wanted to share with you 50 things I’ve learned along the way—through leadership, loss, resilience, reinvention, and everything in between.
Not as rules. But as truths I come back to.
50 Things I’ve Learned
You can be strong and still feel overwhelmed. Both can exist at the same time.
Resilience isn’t about bouncing back—it’s about bending without breaking.
The way you lead under pressure is what people remember most.
You don’t have to have all the answers to be a powerful leader.
Clarity often comes after the hardest seasons, not before.
You can outgrow roles, identities, and versions of yourself—and that’s a good thing.
Burnout doesn’t always look like collapse. Sometimes it looks like high performance… for too long.
The body keeps score. Ignoring it has a cost.
Pausing is not a weakness. It’s wisdom.
You don’t need to prove your worth—you need to protect your energy.
The hardest chapters often shape your deepest purpose.
People don’t need perfection from you. They need kindness.
Psychological safety isn’t a “nice to have.” It changes everything.
You can hold high standards and deep humanity at the same time.
Letting go is sometimes the most strategic move you can make.
Not everyone will understand your path—and they don’t need to.
Growth is often uncomfortable, quiet, and unseen.
Comparison will pull you out of your own path faster than anything else.
Your nervous system matters more than you think.
Rest is part of performance, not separate from it.
There is no such thing as perfect timing. There is only the decision to begin.
Confidence is built through action, not before it.
You can lead while still healing.
Some seasons are about expansion. Others are about survival. Both matter.
The people who truly support you are everything.
Saying no is a leadership skill.
You don’t have to carry everything alone.
The most powerful leaders know how to listen deeply.
Your presence often matters more than your words.
You can reinvent yourself more than once in a lifetime.
Loss changes you—but it can also deepen you.
Gratitude and grief can coexist.
You don’t “move on”—you move forward, differently.
The smallest moments often become the ones that matter most.
You are allowed to change your mind.
Leadership is less about control and more about trust.
Your story—especially the hard parts—can become someone else’s roadmap.
Courage doesn’t always look bold. Sometimes it’s quiet and steady.
You don’t need to rush clarity. It unfolds.
Being busy is not the same as being effective.
The way you speak to yourself matters more than you think.
You can rebuild, even when it feels like everything has shifted.
Boundaries create space for what actually matters.
You don’t have to choose between performance and well-being. You can build both.
Slowing down can actually move you forward faster.
There is always another chapter available to you.
You are more adaptable than you give yourself credit for.
Meaningful work is often built, not found.
The best leaders never stop evolving.
You are allowed to become someone new—at any stage of your life.
If there’s one thing I know for sure at 50, it’s this:
Life will keep changing. The pressure won’t disappear. The expectations won’t slow down. But how we meet it—that’s where everything shifts.
That’s the work I care most about now. Helping leaders navigate pressure without losing themselves along the way. And maybe that’s what this chapter is really about. There’s more ahead. Stay tuned!!
